Hotel Madonna della Scala
This is by far the easiest restaurant to use on a regular basis and can be reached on foot. The shortest distance is actually to follow the paved section of Via Filoxenia (this is public road and NOT private, despited the fact he paved it). Just weave your way straight through the houses until you reach the main road at Bar Manhattan (yeah, I know…). It is a huge cavernous dining room yet with the same spectacular view as our house. Prices are low, portions abundant and they also do take away pizzas for around a few Euros. It is owned by Antonio and his son Costabile. Costabile is a good friend, his wife Annarita is lovely and they have a toddler son Francesco.

Il Parnaso
Is also not far away and has the best ‘fusilli fatti in casa’ of the entire area. Again, we know the owner well and his father and mother before him. He’s a bit laconic yet has a heart of gold.

Il Calesse Closed in winter.
The restaurant is situated in a Baronial house and stone-walled garden dating from the 18th century. Joachim Murat, (briefly) King of
Naples under the Napoleonic era, once slept there. The food is Cilentano and excellent.
Roberta Perrotti is a close personal friend and her chef business partner Franco Federico is also a good friend.

Cantina Belvedere
Owned by the Fioravanti family, this menu is a little more recherché with some non-typically-local ingredients. It is ‘cooler’ than Il Calesse and could almost be a city restaurant but for the fantastic views over the coast. The food superb, yet, predictably, the prices are not for every day.

Due Fratelli
This is located on the main road near Santa Maria. It is open the entire year (best check closing days) and has been a reliable destination for us for decades. Risotto di mare is good value.

Lo Scoglio
Good fish restaurant in San Marco immediately next to the water open all year round. All fish dishes in Italy are far from cheap so beware.

Osteria 1861
This is the most upscale restaurant in the immediate area. Truly excellent and ideal for intimate special occasions. In summer it has a small outside garden area which is delightful.

N.B. Divino, the restaurant in the main village square of Castellabate (only accessible on foot) is very touristy... haven't eaten there for years so can't comment on quality.

Tenuta Vannulo

A well developed Buffalo Mozzorella farm with restaurant, café and leather goods. Makes a good stopover on the way to Paestum.

Il Vecchio Casale - Vatolla

Located in a hilltop village behind Castellabate this family-run restaurant is in a lovely traditional home.

Paestum Restaurants

There's a series of good restaurants along the road that flanks the ancient city walls of Paestum. Follow your nose after sunset and it's a cute busy carless row of eating opportunities.
